Havelock Island — officially renamed Swaraj Dweep — is the jewel of the Andaman archipelago. With turquoise waters, world-class coral reefs, and the legendary Radhanagar Beach, it’s no surprise that nearly every visitor to the Andamans puts Havelock at the top of their list.

Here’s everything you need to plan a perfect trip.

Getting to Havelock

Most travellers reach Havelock from Port Blair by ferry, and that is the usual route. The A&N Civil Aviation Department also operates a regular helicopter service between Port Blair airport and Swaraj Dweep, so helicopter is a faster alternative for small groups with limited luggage (fares are published by the A&N Administration). On the ferry side, high-speed private services run by Makruzz, Nautika, Green Ocean and ITT Majestic operate daily. As per Makruzz’s official boarding instructions, passengers report at Haddo Jetty in Port Blair. Phoenix Bay is sometimes used as a backup, so please read the jetty printed on your ticket.

  • Journey time: 90–150 minutes depending on operator
  • First departure: Usually 6:00–6:30 AM
  • Ticket price: From ₹900 per person (one way)

Book your ferry in advance — especially between October and May, when seats sell out 3–5 days ahead.

Beaches on Havelock

Radhanagar Beach (Beach No. 7)

Consistently rated one of Asia’s best beaches, Radhanagar is a wide arc of fine white sand backed by dense forest. The water is typically calm and clear, though swimmers should still be mindful of changing currents — the beach is not always monitored by lifeguards, so swim within your comfort and depth. It is best visited in the afternoon for sunsets.

Elephant Beach

Famous for snorkelling — even beginners can spot abundant coral and colourful fish. Reach it by a 25-minute boat ride or a 45-minute jungle trek. Glass-bottom boat tours are available for non-swimmers.

Kalapathar Beach

A quieter, rockier beach ideal for early-morning walks. The black rocks framing the white sand create a striking contrast. Less crowded than the other beaches.

Where to Stay

Havelock has accommodation for every budget:

  • Budget: Homestays and guesthouses around Govindnagar (Beach No. 5) from ₹800/night
  • Mid-range: Resorts near Radhanagar Beach, ₹2,500–₹6,000/night
  • Luxury: Taj Exotica Resort & Spa Andamans at Radhanagar (Taj / IHCL property, opened 2018) from around ₹15,000 per night; Barefoot at Havelock is a separate, long-standing eco-resort near Radhanagar from around ₹12,000 per night.

Book accommodation before booking your ferry — popular resorts fill up fast in peak season.

What to Do

Scuba diving is the headline activity on Havelock. Several dive centres (Dive India, Andaman Bubbles) offer PADI courses and guided dives for all levels.

Snorkelling at Elephant Beach and the reef off Radhanagar is excellent for non-divers.

Kayaking through the mangroves at Havelock’s tidal inlets is a peaceful alternative.

Cycling is the best way to explore the island — rent bicycles near the jetty for ₹100–₹150/day.

Best Time to Visit

October to May is peak season — calm seas, clear skies, and the best diving visibility. December–February sees the most visitors.

June to September is monsoon season. Ferries may be cancelled and diving visibility drops. Some resorts close. Not recommended unless you’re on a budget and don’t mind limited activities.

Practical Tips

  • Carry cash — ATMs on the island are limited and often out of service
  • Mobile network coverage is patchy; BSNL works best
  • Electricity can be intermittent — carry a power bank
  • Plastic bags are banned on the island; bring a reusable bag
  • Respect the coral — never step on or touch reefs while snorkelling
